Phobias are learnt behaviours that have been developed to keep you away from a perceived threat and have been stored and by your unconscious mind in its effort to keep you safer. The best bit is, is that they can be ‘unlearnt’ or re-programmed

Types of Phobias

  • Animal phobias. Such as dogs, insects, snakes or rodents.

  • Phobias of the natural environment. Such as heights, water, darkness, storms or germs.

  • Situational phobias. Such as flying, going to the dentist, tunnels, small spaces or escalators.

  • Body-based phobias. Such as blood, vomit, injections, choking, medical procedures or childbirth.

  • Sexual phobias. Such as sexual acts or fear of nudity.

  • Social Phobias. Such as public speaking, talking to others, meeting new people or eating or drinking in public

  • Agoraphobia. Such as being outside alone, being in open spaces or being in crowds

  • Other phobias. Such as certain foods, objects or costumed characters.

  • However, your phobia can be a completely unique experience. There are many more phobias than those listed above.

What is a phobia?

Having a phobia is more than just being afraid of something; it is a type of anxiety disorder.

Someone with a phobia may feel anxious just thinking or talking about their fear. This can have a real impact on their day-to-day life, and they may make decisions based on avoiding the object of their phobia.

Phobias are creations of our subconscious minds and in reality, our minds are ‘hard-wired’ to be afraid of only two things, a fear of falling and sudden loud noises. All others fear are learnt. The good thing is that by working with the subconscious fears and phobias can be unlearnt and can be replaced with better responses.
